The reality of math

Is math real? The question seems absurd: Doesn%u219t two and two equal four? Can%u219t we describe the details of the universe in precise mathematical terms? Of course math is real! But Mario Livio, a senior astrophysicist at the Hubble Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, isn%u219t so convinced.

In his fourth book, Is God a Mathematician?, Livio explores mysteries that have long perplexed theologians, philosophers, and mathematicians alike: Are mathematical concepts woven into the very fabric of the cosmos? And if they are, did a divine weaver put them there?

The answers, Livio tells us, are yes %u214 and no. Mathematical concepts %u214 like the golden ratio, or Euclidian geometry %u214 are useful fictions that don%u219t exist in the natural world. (In other words, the circle and the square are make-believe.) But mathematicians who work within these invented languages can discover concrete truths about the nature of the universe. As for God . . . let%u219s just say that He%u219s very, very improbable.

Patti Smith quote (with The Big Necessity in mind)

“The transformation of waste is perhaps the oldest pre-occupation of man. Man being the chosen alloy, he must be reconnected via shit, at all cost. Inherent within us is the dream of the task of the alchemist to create from the clay of man and to re-create from excretion of man pure and then soft and then solid gold. All must not be art. Some art we must disintegrate. Positive anarchy must exist.”

The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and Why It Matter
By Rose George

An utterly original exploration of the world of human waste that will surprise, outrage–and entertain

Produced behind closed doors, disposed of discreetly, and hidden by euphemism, bodily waste is something common to all and as natural as breathing, yet we prefer not to talk about it. But we should–even those of us who take care of our business in pristine, sanitary conditions. For it’s not only in developing countries that human waste is a major public health threat: population growth is taxing even the most advanced sewage systems, and the disease spread by waste kills more people worldwide every year than any other single cause of death. Even in America, 1.95 million people have no access to an indoor toilet. Yet the subject remains unmentionable.

Behind Liz Cheney’s group, a weird legacy of torture

February 9, 2010

The arrest of an Army sergeant (and Iraq veteran) who allegedly waterboarded his 4-year-old daughter for failing to recite the alphabet is sickening. Yet it may be the kind of news we must come to expect if, as a society, the United States determines that torture is an acceptable method of securing information and inducing [...]

Assure child abuse registry is fair

February 9, 2010

Last week, Greg Geist drove from his home in Carroll to the State Capitol to attend a subcommittee hearing. Lawmakers were discussing an issue that has affected him and thousands of other Iowans: the rights of those on the state’s child abuse registry.
Legislation being considered would require the state to respond to appeals within a [...]

Online campaign raises child abuse awareness with cartoons

February 9, 2010

It’s a sad fact that children as young as five years old are targeted by abusers online. So, it makes sense to raise awareness of online safety by sending a message straight to them, in a way they can understand, rather than preaching to their parents.
Now, several online safety awareness cartoons are being launched on [...]
